To our members, partners, sponsors, and the Calgary tennis community,
The Calgary Tennis Club Board wishes to clarify recent communications regarding the Phillip Thomas Memorial Tournament.
For more than 100 years, CTC has played a leading role in the growth of tennis in Calgary. Generations of players, volunteers, coaches, families, and community leaders have contributed to making this club one of the most respected tennis institutions in our city. That legacy matters deeply to this Board.
In recent years, the Phillip Thomas Memorial Tournament (PTMT) has become an important part of that legacy. Continuing from a well-established tradition of annual hosting of Open Tennis events by the CTC, this event has brought together players, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters from across Alberta for a valuable cause. To that end, Board directives have consistently supported hosting the PTMT in 2026 with event leadership and organization undertaken by Calgary Tennis Society (CTS) in recognition of the charitable nature of the event.
Planning for this event, along with other events on the 2026 calendar, has in fact been underway and ramping up in recent weeks. As such, the recent decision by the Calgary Tennis Society(CTS) to cancel the PTMT tournament, was an unexpected and disappointing outcome. At no point did the CTC Board direct that the tournament be cancelled, discontinued, or moved from CTC.
At the same time, the Board is committed to ensuring that CTC remains a host to premier tennis events in 2026 and beyond. The club is looking to develop and deliver a CTC hosted tournament in 2026 that reflects the high standards, strong community engagement, and competitive excellence that members have come to expect. We are in the planning stage and look forward to providing an update to the CTC membership and the broader tennis community as soon as details can be confirmed.
The future of the sport in this city is strong as we work together to build upon our legacy, strong community, and spirit of collaboration, to create ever new opportunities for players and members in the years ahead. CTC remains committed to these principles and we appreciate your support and look forward to your participation.
Sincerely,
